Scrap Box Sunday: Scented Sachets

Soooo, today's post is only about 12 hours late. That's not too bad, right?? I've been so busy this week and very crafty this weekend! Plus, Blogger spent the last 3 hours being difficult about me uploading pictures *sadface* 

Today I made 4 Mother's Day cards (and managed to convince my man to make one for his mum too! Amazing!) sewed a couple of the scented sachets I'm going to show you now, and started work on some other projects that I'll be able to show you later in the week! Yesterday I made necklaces for Mother's Day (which I'll share later as well!). Amongst all of this four of our pet ratties have been having daily vet visits for injections - poor babies! Pretty sure they feel like pincushions at the moment! :( And that's not to mention all the work at and for the Uni this week - hectic! *phew!* BUT! I'm still here and ready to share with you wonderful people :D That's how much I love you!!

What You Need:

* Fabric scraps

* Iron-on interfacing

* Ribbon scraps

* Uncooked rice

* Essential oils

What To Do:

First things first - put some rice in a plastic bowl and add a few drops of essential oil. I made one sachet with lavender and one with marjoram. Stir the oil evenly through the rice and set it aside.

Now, create two fabric rectangles (per sachet - I'm making two sachets, so I've made four fabric rectangles) with you fabric scraps. I chose to use a plain rectangle for the back and a two-coloured, patchworky rectangle for the front.

So, I had to sew my front piece together.

You could just do plain rectangles, or you could do more intricate patchwork panels, whatever floats your boat :D

Next, iron your interfacing on. I used lightweight interfacing because the main point of having interfacing in this project is to give it some extra strength and add an extra layer to keep the essential oils from leaking through your fabric, lol.

Pin your two rectangles together, right sides facing inside.

Pin a loop of ribbon into the inside of your fabric rectangles. This will be a loop that you can hang your sachet from later.

Sew around most of the edges of the sachet, leaving a gap. I like to leave it in the middle of one side rather than at a corner because I find it easier to hide when I top stitch later.

Turn your sachet right sides out.

Fill with your scented rice! The first time I did it, I spooned it in. The second time I did it I wised up and used a funnel made from paper ;) Once your scented rice is in you can top it up with plain rice if you need to. I did.

Roll the edges of your gap inside and pin them into place for sewing.

Top stitch around the entire sachet and you're done!

Make as many as you want! We've used S-hooks to hang them and put the marjoram one in the bedroom to help us sleep at night, and the lavender one in the bathroom. I plan on making a citrus scented one for the laundry too, and I might even experiment with vanilla for the lounge room. Mmmm, tasty scents! :D
