It's Monday! Nappy Bag Advice Please?

My best friend's big sister is expecting!! We lived next door to each other growing up, so they're pretty much family and I'm very excited!!

She's asked me to sew her a nappy bag - a diaper bag I suppose if you're in the U.S. ;) BUT the trick is, this is her first baby and as you guys already know, I don't have any kids of my own yet, so neither of us know what makes a good nappy bag!

Backpack? Tote?
Big? Small? Ginormous?
Zippered? Magnetic closure? Ribbon ties?
A few big pockets? Lots of little pockets? What type of pockets?!
Built in change mat? Removable change mat?

Too many options..!
This tutorial from Moda Bake Shop looks pretty cool, with some mods probably like a spot for a detachable change mat and a zip closure. I  do love the colours!! ;)

So... Any advice?
What were the most important or useful aspects for you?

Hi Rissa,
My kids are now 17,21,&25 so it has been a long time since I carried a diaper bag. What I did appreciate in a bag were pockets and a waterproof lining in some pockets ( for food, drinks, dirty, wet, clothes). One bag had a large fold over flap that could be used as a changing surface. We used to spent a lot of time at the beach and park so my bag needed to be very durable. I would have appreciated a secure spot for keys and extra pacifiers. I'm sure the younger mothers have more to add. Just collect everything that needs to be inside and design around it.

Hey! I am catching-up on your blog. Larger is better than smaller. I like the one you have shown because it has the elasticized pockets to hold the bottles upright. VERY important!!! I refer removable changing pad so it can be washed separately. Zip or velcro closure so nothing spills out....

Post the finished product, Rissa!!!

I agree with the commments above. Something bigger is better. I carry a lot of stuff in my diaper bag (especially now with both kids).

What I like about my diaper bag is that there is a zippered pouch in the front where I can keep all my diapers and wipes and a removable changing pad). This way I don't have to search around to find diapers in one big bag.

Then there is the main part of the bag where I can keep clothes, food and anything else.

On the sides of my bad I have the elastic pouches for the bottles.

It's also a great idea to include a wet bag/laundry bag - for wet clothes or wash cloths

I'm sure whatever you make it will be beautiful!
Can't wait to see it.

Yep, bigger is better! And I used my removable changing pad a lot! I like the one you posted but maybe a bit bigger. Babies are exciting!

Hey Rissa!
Personally, I like a BIG bag, just not HUGE to the point you fall over when you pick it up! ha
Pockets, they are a must. A couple big ones, some small ones, they are ALL GOOD. few things that are a MUST for MOM with ever diper bag.
1) you HAVE to have somewhere to stick YOUR stuff. wallet. keys, chap stick, ect, so you can just grab it and not have to dump the whole thing out.
2) a removable changing pad, is a must for me. I hate the built in ones. Blah!
3) a "DIRTY" pouch. A nice little plastic zip up pouch in the bag, JUST incase your kid has an EXPLOSIVE diper or happens to get everything they ate down the front of them!
those are MUSTS for my diper bag!

And the things I LOVE about a diper bag
Specific pockets! like one the perfect size for 7 dipers. One the perfect size for a couple of bottles, sippy cups and SNACKS!. And one the perfect size for WIPES!

I can't wait to see what you make! :)
